Fic--Pieces Won't Fit--PG
Title: Pieces Won't Fit
Author: Rubyfruit Pixie ([info]rubyfruit_pixie)
Fandom: Kingdom Hearts
Rating: PG
Warnings: Hints of yaoi, profanity
Disclaimer: I do not own Kingdom Hearts. This fic, however, is mine.
A/N: I guess that this is pre-Nise/Kairi, and kind of like "Clockwork Princess".

Pieces, pieces, it's all gone to pieces.

Kairi sighed. Leon had to be lying. Then again, she doubted that. Kairi had been faced with something that was fairly easy to lie about. So, according to Leon, she wasn't really a Princess of Heart, and was in fact, chosen to hold the Darkness from the other six or so, plus that of possibly half of the worlds.

And "half" was a generous underestimate.

------

In another world, Kairi was on the floor of a room filled with puzzle pieces. She guessed that she would have to put the pieces together, so she set to it. Unfortunately, none of them actually fit.

"Are you worried, Kairi?"

She looked up from her futile art project. "What do you---"

Those eyes. Those eyes that she'd looked into some time before. "Riku," she said, "What are you doing here?"

The boy smiled at her. "I'm not Riku. My name is Nisemono."

Kairi sighed and went back to attempting to solve the puzzles.

"You'll never solve them," Nisemono said, "There are too many missing pieces."

-----

"It's different when you got dumped for another guy, though."

Another conversation with Selphie that weekend. It was neutral enough. There was a little cafe downtown, and it was relatively quiet.

Kairi smiled. "Not really. I'm happy for them."

"Bullshit," Selphie said, "That's bullshit, and you know it as well as I do."

Kairi shifted uncomfortably in her seat. What could she say to that? Selphie was right, though. It was hard to hide her emotions from Selphie. It was as if she could simply pick up on when someone was lying.

"My best friend," Selphie said, "An entity of the Darkness. That's actually pretty cool."

Kairi sighed. "Except for the fact that it's not you," she said, "It's me. And I think that my life is pretty much done because of some decision that someone else made for me before I could understand what it meant."

Selphie said, "You'll make the best of it. You always do."

------

In that Other World, Kairi was surrounded by Anemone flowers. "What the..."

Nisemono appeared again, this time, right in front of her. "Welcome."

Kairi shrieked, and at that, Nisemono chuckled softly.

"This," Nisemono said, "is the world that your dreams have created."

Kairi looked at Nisemono. Why, of all people, did he have to look like Riku? But, Nisemono wasn't Riku. Nisemono's eyes held the promise of "I'll never leave you", and, unlike Riku, this Nisemono person seemed to care enough to invade her personal Dream-space, as weird and possibly wrong as it was.

"Why are you here?" Kairi asked.

Nisemono smiled a bit, but said nothing.

---------

"What?!"

Another day with Selphie, this time, Wakka was there, as well. They were at Selphie's house, this time, with enough food to feed several times their number

Kairi nodded. "Then he smiled at me."

Wakka thought for a second. "Hmm...you had a dream about Toshiro, right?"

Kairi sighed. "A thousand times, yes. But, he introduced himself as 'Nisemono'."

"Aliens," Wakka said plainly.

Selphie rolled her eyes, and Kairi sighed. Always aliens with that boy.

"Well," Wakka said, "Aliens can enter dreams, and..."

Selphie said, "Aliens? The fuck? Look, I know what it is. Riku just dumped you out of the blue, and your dreams are telling you to move on, with Toshiro."

Wakka blinked. "...Or it could be what Selphie said. I still think that it's aliens..."

Kairi sighed. "So, Toshiro is in my dreams because my subconscious wants me to be happy for Riku and Roxas, right?"

"Well," Selphie said, "I'm telling you that it's okay to be mad at the both of them. In fact, it's okay if you want to call the Death Angel on their asses. But...do your best, Kairi!"

--------

"So, have you decided on an answer yet?"

Another night in the World of Dreams, another night with this stranger with Riku's--no, not Riku's--smile.

"An answer?" Kairi asked, "About what?"

"Us," Nisemono answered, taking Kairi's hands in his, "What do you think?"

"What?" Kairi asked.

Nisemono smiled a bit as he pulled Kairi into an embrace. "Stay with me. Forget about your pain for now. Come away with me."

Kairi blinked. "Come away with you? What the--"

The last objection she'd ever make was cut off by a long kiss.

"Isn't that much better?" Nisemono asked, "Is the noise inside your head gone?"

Kairi nodded slowly.

Nisemono grinned. "Good. Now, come away with me. There is a field outside of town..."

-----

Nisemono smiled at an entranced Kairi, his eyes looking into hers, the life long gone from her once-vibrant blue-violet eyes, her expression blank. She looked so peaceful there as she lay down in the field of flowers. It seemed cruel to invade her dreams and, in that final moment, give her that final push to meet him out there.

Cruel, yes, but in the end, it was so much kinder to Kairi to do that to her than it would have been for him to watch her suffer like that. Kairi would never be able to get the pieces to fit. Nisemono knew that she couldn't find every piece of her heart, not alone.

He would help her. Yes, he was helping her. So all of this wasn't bad, at least, not to him. He was rescuing her, like a good, deserving knight did for a princess.

He smiled a bit, lying down next to Kairi, stroking that red hair that he loved so much.

"Never worry," Nisemono said, "It's okay, Kairi. As long as I am with you, you will never worry about anything, ever again."

*makes happy fangirl noises* I love it! The end was so sweet, in a deliciously creepy way, and Wakka's aliens theory had me laughing out loud. ^^;
