Characters: Larxene, Kairi
Pairings: None...but there's a mention of Riku/Sora, and Extremely Vague Hints of Larxene/Kairi and Larxene/Quistis.
Summary: From Oblivion, Larxene watches Kairi and gets a glimpse of her former self...and contemplates it all.
A/N: ...Yeah. Based on the idea that Kairi's barbed words are a small rebellion since she can't outright leave Sora and Riku, lest she be called unfaithful...
Yeah. I think WAY too hard when writing fanfiction. This is loosely affiliated with the Psycho Girl Love Anthology, as Larxene is in the Giant Waiting Room called Oblivion, Bloody Sunday is mentioned, and Vincent is Oblivion's Doorkeeper. The phrase "Destined Duo" is a sarcastic take on the name for Sora, Riku, and Kairi: The Destined Trio. And the final line in the story, the first line of dialogue Kairi has, is from Chapter 2 of "Ribbon".
Among the few furnishings in the great void known as Oblivion, there was an immense viewscreen on which occupants can watch their lives, as well as the lives of others. Since Oblivion was quite empty, and she didn't want to talk to the Doorkeeper, Larxene took to apathetically watching the mundane lives of those still alive.
She absentmindedly flipped channels, complaining about how people lived such dull, uninteresting lives, then she found herself captivated by one channel.
"That girl..."
Who else should appear on the screen but Kairi herself. And in those blue eyes, Larxene saw a reflection of herself, as she used to be. When she was Relena, and so eager to please that she went along with her brother when he said he was going to repay his debts.
Part of Larxene was still the naive, eager-to-please Relena. She only need remind herself that she aligned herself with Marluxia believing him to be a faithful ally to know that.
"A martyr of the highest."
Larxene watched Kairi as she strived to become a good little figurine for the good little hero, and saw again, in the red-haired girl, a much younger version of herself who wanted so badly to be accepted by the boys that she became like them.
This was not Kairi. Kairi was groomed for martyrdom, as is every girl.
And so, Larxene watched as Kairi made tiny rebellions, said words with tiny barbs to the two in the Destined Duo, refusing to be a mere Third Wheel. Attempting to assert herself, as to say, "Here I am"...by being the opposite of a Good-Girl Alice. Quistis called this the "Angel or Bitch Dilema". Larxene knew what path Quistis took when she rebelled against Ansem the Wise and took the dagger in her back like a true martyr would. Maybe Quistis was in this godforsaken place, Larxene didn't know.
"You weren't promised a kingdom..."
She, being a Nobody, had no idea how Kairi must feel. Larxene smiled every time Kairi said or did something mean and spiteful to Riku, Sora, Tidus, or any combination of the three. It did her non-existent heart good to see acts of cruelty, no matter how small. She, like the rest of the Organization, believed that they had some clandestine knowledge that the rest of the worlds did not have. In this case, Larxene believed she knew the purpose of the Princesses of Heart. They were little more than batteries at best. At worse, they were slaves in every sense of the word.
Larxene knew this because she was named for a princess of another world.
"...Keep standing up for yourself, Kairi. Be strong, I'm rooting for ya."
Larxene knew that Kairi needed the support, even though it was from a woman living in the middle of Oblivion. It was better than nothing. She wondered, when will Kairi ever lose herself to the darkness? She was already halfway there.
"You'll grow up and become a good little martyr, won't you?"
Sora and Riku left Kairi there alone as they walked hand in hand.
"Fine," Kairi said, "If you don't need me, I don't need you."
Larxene could read between the lines. Kairi meant: "Yeah, I hope a rabid pack of Heartless scratches out your eyes". The difference between Relena then and Kairi now is that Relena would actually say that she hopes a rabid pack of Heartless eats people.
Kairi looked out into the sunset, and wondered if Tidus was right.
"Unpredictable, tempermental as the sea..."
A little rebellion was a good thing, right? For her sanity, right? So she wouldn't be left out anymore? So she could be seen?
Larxene felt something she hadn't in a long time.
Larxene sat there as if in a trance, watching this girl Kairi, wishing to be at her side.
Before this "episode" of the day came to an end, Larxene heard that voice that sounded like windchinmes say:
“What’s that? Yes, I knew. No, I don’t care. No, it wasn’t in my bedroom, it was in my living room. No, I will not have a threesome with you now that I’m single. Yes, I’ve been mean to them. No, I don’t care anymore. They are not my friends anymore.”
Larxene sighed.
"You'll be martyred just like the princess I was named for. Martyred for the crime of existing."
What a shame. Then Kairi would be in this godforsaken place as well.
