Title: If I Ever Caused You Trouble
Author: Rubyfruit Pixie
Fandom: Kingdom Hearts
Rating: PG
Genre: Sorta-het, sorta-not
Warnings: Some profanity, mild hints of RikuxSora
Characters: Sora, Kairi
Summary: The not-so-epic "romance" of Sora and Kairi comes to a close.
Disclaimer: I don't own Kingdom Hearts. Big companies that aren't me do own the characters. I do, however, lay claim to this story.
A/N: For the Breakup Meme over on Eljay. The title is from a Coldplay song. Have fun with this one, folks!
It was supposed to be easy. A simple phone call and a "Hey, Kairi, I'm sorry, it's over". It was supposed to be the easiest thing in the world. Kairi wasn't even home, and he got the answering machine instead.
Simple enough, but things with Kairi were never that simple.
Sora hadn't counted on Kairi checking her answering machine, nor had he counted her inviting him to her house that sunny day. So he was there, in her pink, pink bedroom in her big, big house, sitting across from Kairi, he on her bed, she in a pink butterfly chair. So much pink, it seemed like an inappropriately cheery atmosphere for such a somber event.
"So," Kairi said, "Is that it?"
"...Yeah," Sora answered, "That's it." He felt like crawling into a hole and dying, and he imagined that Kairi felt the same way. He was the Keyblade Master and he could barely manage this?!
Kairi smiled a bit. "Goodbye, then."
Sora stood up and left without saying goodbye.
As soon as he left, Kairi never stopped staring forward, grabbing the star-shaped paperweight. "You're my star", he'd said when he gave it to her--it was bullshit, and even the average five-year-old would be able to figure that out.
She took the heavy paperweight, threw it, and reveled in the sound of broken glass. That mirror wasn't really worth much in the end. She knew that Sora bought such trinkets out of mere obligation. Kairi knew good and damn well that she was dragging it on for the sake of keeping up appearances. She the pretty princess, he the brave knight--never mind the fact that he already had someone waiting for him--and she knew that she wasn't good enough.
So, with the state of the pretty, full-length mirror matching the condition of her pretty, fragile heart, Kairi said a few parting words that Sora would never hear.
"You never really cared. Neither did I."
