Fic -- "Toy Soldiers" -- PG
Title: Toy Soldiers

Author: Rubyfruit Pixie

Fandom: Kingdom Hearts

Warnings: A tiny bit of profanity.

Characters: Leon, Aerith, Yuffie, Selphie, Kairi, Riku, Sora, Quistis, more random people

Summary: A story about lots of people revolving around the hopes, dreams, and fears of a people bracing for a Second Keyblade War

Disclaimer: Kingdom Hearts and anything related to Final Fantasy is not mine. Nope. Not at all. This story is.

A/N: Believe it or not, this fic was not inspired by the 80s song of the same name. Rather, it was inspired by music from various Gundam series, Kotoko songs, and some songs by Tokyo Jihen. As far as genre, this can probably be described as "Mostly gen with a dash of shippiness".

A Knight Dreams...

More than anything, Selphie wanted to be in the Third Century Magical Task Force. She wanted to wear the deep, rich reds of the Weapons Specialist unit. She wanted to be a knight, whether she was approved or not by the Solaris Council. Selphie wanted to fight the good fight against the ever-mysterious Darkness more than anything. Almost anything. The only thing that came before Selphie's wish to be a knight was Selphie's wish to be Kairi's knight. Even if she passed every exam, it would be meaningless if she could not stay close enough to Kairi to keep her safe.

So Selphie would take and pass every exam, climb every mountain, do anything to reach that lofty goal.

Even if it killed her, she would become the knight that she was meant to be.

--------

Disillusion

"This is boring."

Standing guard at night was the least exciting part of this work. Standing guard, at night, at a school that was far away from one's post was even worse. Yuffie hated guard duty. It was the least exciting, least rewarding part of her position. None of the fun stuff happened at night, even on the Destiny Islands, especially on the campus of the illustrious Elysium Island Academy.

Leon shot a disapproving glance at Yuffie's remark. "It's better than being dead."

He had a point, but it didn't make standing guard at an empty building any more exciting.

"Right." Yuffie sighed. "Still boring as hell."

--------

Soldier

"Sora."

Sora looked up from the comic book he was reading, trying to ignore Riku. When Riku said his name like that, Sora knew not to pay him any mind. It meant that Riku was thinking ahead again.

There was no point in it.

"Sora...We stand at the possible end of everything."

"I know!" Sora exclaimed, "I know."

"So," Riku said, "What are you going to do now?"

Sora thought for a moment. Even as the Keybearer, he was really no different from the legions of nameless, faceless clockwork soldiers that served in the Task Force. He had the title of Chosen One, he had a sacred weapon, he's the goddamn Keyblade Master.

Sora smiled. "Stay alive. Or try to. As long as possible."

It didn't change the possibility of dying.

Riku frowned at Sora's wide grin. "...I'll be there with you."

-----------

Mayday

Kairi stared into nothing. What was she going to school for if all the worlds were going to be destroyed, and everyone was going to die? What was she fighting for? Or would be, if Riku and Sora showed a little more faith in her skill, and spent a little less time treating her as though she was made of glass. She understood it, though. Anything to protect the fair princess.

Never mind that this fair princess can protect herself just fine.

What was her role in all of this? She was the Seventh Princess of Heart--or was she? Since she was told that she was little more than a container for Darkness, she wasn't sure about that. She wasn't sure about anything anymore.

All that she was sure of was that another day she fought, Sora didn't. And Sora would be needed for the final battle.

There were still back doors and side doors and oh-so-many windows that could be opened and re-opened. There were people who knew that there were other doors, other ways, the possiblity of a Second Keyblade War, enough to establish things like the Elysium Academy and the Third Century Magical Task Force. There were enough people who knew about the possibility of other doors to the worlds.

Kairi almost wished that everything would go back to the way it was, even if all of her wishes were in vain.

Officer and Vigilante Game

"What are you fighting for?"

Quistis grinned. It was another warm night on the roof of the academy. She smiled, sitting next to an incensed Aerith, who was fixing the once-crisply tied white ribbon at her waist. Watching someone barely her age throw their lives away for the sake of an entire world was utterly depressing.

"It is my duty to maintain the peace."

Aerith got a good look at the other woman who decided that it would be fun to lurk on rooftops at night, wondering why she had to meet the woman called Quistis again tonight. And why Quistis had to wear the brilliant yellow of the Task Force if she was nothing more than a vigilante.

Quistis smiled. She'd heard of this one. "Aerith, right?" When she got an affirmative nod in response, she continued, "You'd do better knowing why you were fighting instead of quoting the handbook word-for-word."

Aerith looked at the sky, then out at the rest of the campus. "I'm surprised that you bothered to read it." Clearly, Quistis didn't read the part about non-Task Force members wearing a Task Force uniform. "What are you fighting for?"

Quistis thought for a second before saying, " I want to bring justice to all the worlds."

Aerith sighed. Maybe Quistis had a point. They were working toward the same end.

"Fine," Aerith said, "I'd like to see you earn that uniform one day."

Quistis stood up, saying, "No thank you. I prefer to do this my way." With that, she left.

Aerith returned to her lone rooftop patrol, wondering about the particulars of justice, peace, and to answer the question that she was asked every night.

"What are you fighting for?"
