Fic--Pretty/Cynical--PG-13
Title: Pretty/Cynical
Author: Rubyfruit Pixie
Fandom: Kingdom Hearts
Genre: Possible romance/slight angst
Summary: Kairi tells the ugly truth about her so-called beautiful life, but that's okay. Quistis is always listening. Quistis is always watching.
Pairing(s): Quistis/Kairi
Rating: PG
Warning(s): Profanity, references to same- and opposite-gender sexual relationships.
Disclaimer: Nope. Don't own Kingdom Hearts. I am playing with the characters and settings, if a little roughly.
A/N: Partly for Syretia, partially for me. A sequel to "On Days Like This" and there are things from "Believe" there, too. This is kind of not for Sora/Kairi fans.

"I don't know why you asked me to see you."

Kairi hated talking to anyone about this sort of thing. There were two things that Kairi hated discussing with adults, and here, her teacher asked for not one, but both of them.

Quistis smiled. She loved working at one of the Academies. It meant that she could have her own office.  "Kairi...Riku has expressed some concern about you...."

Kairi sighed. "I know, I know. It's about the fact that I didn't feel anything about losing that exhibition during Tactical Battle last week. Like I told him, it's no big deal."

Quistis shook her head. "No, I wanted to ask you a couple of things. First and foremost, why you've been avoiding Sora lately...."

"I felt like it," Kairi answered, "I didn't feel like talking to, listening to, or being seen with Sora very much lately."

Quistis didn't write this down. She never wrote these things down. Kairi noticed it. She found it strange to say the least.

"...To be honest, I'm sick of it. Sick of him," Kairi said, "Sick of everything."

Quistis tilted her head. "....That sounds like cause for concern. Aren't you in love with him anymore?"

Kairi laughed bitterly. "I never was. Maybe when I was a kid and I didn't know about the wider world....." Why not say it? Why not say it now?

Because good little princesses never complained.
Good little princesses never showed sorrow, and above all, never showed anger.

Quistis sighed. "I want to help you. I can't do that when you're not helping me."

Kairi laughed again. It wasn't the dainty, delicate little laugh she'd rehearsed for years by far. It was a laugh warped by constantly-suppressed rage.

She stood up and smiled. "There's no helping me."

"Well," Quistis said, "You're awfully cynical for a fifteen-year-old girl who's got everything going for her."

Easy for her to say.

Kairi frowned, sitting back down. "If your life was decided for you since before you were born, and then everyone was trying to force you into a relationship with someone who might as well be your damn brother..." she shakily poured herself a cup of water. "I'd say you'd be pretty cynical too, wouldn't you?"

Quistis frowned. "...I suppose so."

"Because apparently I can't think for myself  because I've got a Princess title that I don't want," Kairi said, finishing off her first cup of ice water. "Apparently, a tiara on the outside means that there's no brain inside. That annoys me."

Quistis sighed. "You're straying from the subject again...."

"I don't like talking about Sora," Kairi said, "He's a great guy, but...I can't make him happy, in bed or otherwise. I don't think of him that way...."

Quistis smiled. That's better. "Would you care to elaborate?"

"...I want to tell you something," Kairi said, "Something that never leaves this room."

Quistis nodded. "Deal."

Kairi sighed, pushing an errant lock of red hair out of her eyes, and said, "It bothers me. Even if Sora might like me that way, I don't feel the same. I can't feel the same no matter how much I try to make myself like him that way, I don't. I can't. Besides, what's wrong with a boy and a girl being friends without wanting to fuck each other, right? Honestly, the idea of sex with Sora makes me physically ill, but it's not because Sora's an unattractive guy."

"You're too close for that," Quistis offered.

"Exactly!" Kairi exclaimed, "It'd be like humping my brother, and since I don't have any, Sora's the closest I have to a brother. I'll have to break it to him gently. ...Thanks, anyway..." She sighed, picking up her bag and nearly walking out the door before she heard it.

"We're not finished yet, Kairi."

Quistis smiled. It was a good idea to plant that particular trigger while the younger girl was unaware.

Kairi blinked. "...Oh...that's right...." Why'd she say that? Why couldn't she move?

Once she felt Quistis's arms around her waist, Kairi knew why.

"Yes," Quistis said at last, "We have so much to do, and so little time in which to do it....well, for now, we have all the time in the world, isn't that right, my little strawberry?"

Kairi could only manage a nod before Phase Two of her session began.
