Fic--Believe--PG
Title: Believe
Author: Rubyfruit Pixie
Fandom: Kingdom Hearts
Summary: Riku and Kairi discuss victory and defeat, success and failure.
Warnings: Mild profanity.
Disclaimer: I don't own Kingdom Hearts. Big companies that aren't me do own the characters. I do, however, lay claim to this story.
A/N: I have no idea where this came from. This takes place a bit after KH2.
Despite everyone's cheers for Kairi to drop, she held on that much tighter.
Riku watched, along with all the other Tenth Years, hoping that Kairi would hold on, even as his classmates were rooting for her to fall. It may have been a five-foot drop from the High-Ring to the pool below, but that five feet were all that stood between victory and defeat for the redhead.
Kairi took one big swing to get herself back into the ring again, only to be sent flying seconds later.
All it took was the telltale splash from Kairi landing in the pool to break the uneasy silence.
One side of the auditorium exploded into loud, victorious cheers, the other, still silent in their defeat.
"Kairi hasn't come up yet," the coach said, "Get the assistance team now!"
It took a few seconds before one arm, one hand, grabbing for the edge of the pool.
Kairi smiled as she emerged, saying, "I'm fine! I'm fine!"
This time, it was time for Kairi's class to cheer on.
-------------
"You lost."
Riku sighed. Why was Kairi so damn happy? She was there. They sat outside for lunch, since the cafeteria was simply too damn loud. Sora wasn't there--go figure.
Kairi shrugged. "So?" Her hair was still a little damp. "But I was so close."
Riku shook his head, taking a bite of his sandwich. "...Ugh. Why do I keep putting onions on these things?"
Kairi laughed, and Riku said, "It sucks more when you lose when victory's so close."
"I know," Kairi said, "I'm fine."
Riku frowned, picking the onions out of his sandwich. "You still lost."
"I know," Kairi said, "You're taking it worse than I am and you weren't even up there!"
Riku sighed. "You heard them cheering for you to drop."
Kairi nodded. "And I didn't. That's a victory in itself."
"Whatever you say," Riku said, "Whatever you say." Another bite of his sandwich. "You still lost."
"Whatever," Kairi said, "There's always next time."
