Fic--Better to Rule in Hell...--PG
Title: Better to Rule in Hell
Author: Rubyfruit Pixie
Fandom: Kingdom Hearts
Rating: PG
Warnings: Profanity, mentions of same- and opposite-gender romance and sexual relations
Summary: Kairi figures that if doing it "right" causes misery, then doing it "wrong" would be better.
Disclamer: No, I do not own Kingdom Hearts. I do, however, own this story.
A/N: Title and theme are from the quote, "Better to Rule in Hell than Serve in Heaven".  More Tales of a Break-Up, also with added angry!Kairi. Post KH2.

"I can't get it right with you, can I?"

Kairi smirked. Sora would never answer a question like that. No, that required a really big pair of whatever. Wasn't it supposed to be the guy who ended a relationship, however farcical it may be? What a way to take responsibility away from her and place the blame on her all at the same time.

Sora's eyes widened. "What are you saying?"

"I just can't get it right with you," Kairi said, "Because I refuse to fade out while you shine."

The crowd was aghast, and Kairi knew it. She damn well knew what would happen at Elysium Academy if a relative no-name Year Nine outsider dared offend the town hero.

Kairi took that into consideration when she told Sora that she was resigning from the Princess of Heart position.

Sora said, "But still--leaving now--and the--what the hell?!"

Kairi giggled. "You see, I can be girly, too. I can be pretty and frilly and pink...but then you'd think I was useless and pathetic. Then it turns out that you like helpless, simpering little girls who do as they're told."

The whole crowd of forty-or-so people started talking, whispering the rumors already, with some taking bets on if or when Kairi or Sora would just punch the other one in the face.

"That's not true!" Sora exclaimed, "I have never called your abilities into question. And I have never wanted anyone else--"

"Cut the pious, look-how-generous-I-am bullshit for once, Sora!"

The shout rang through the lush, green courtyard. It sounded so angry, so raw, and so unlike Kairi, that even Riku and Selphie jumped back.

Sora stared at her through wide, blue eyes. He probably didn't believe that Kairi was capable of swearing, let alone swearing at him.

After all, how dare the little outsider ditch the great, wonderful Sora? Did she not know what she was missing?

Kairi smirked. "I can't do it right, can I? I just can't win with you. You won't let me fight by your side because you think that I can't. I gave up on that pipe dream and now you think I'm some sort of airhead, unworthy of your attentions. Because you're so deep that you can just barely make decisions on your own. So cut the bullshit for once, you goddamn tool!"

She laughed bitterly. That ought to get him to drop the Look At How Heroic I Am, Saving The Poor Little Outsider From Herself act.

Sora looked down. "This is about Namine, isn't it," he asked, "Is that why you called me out in front of half my graduating class, including my best friend?"

Kairi's smirk widened into a grin, a chuckle escaping from her throat. "Is this about Namine, you ask." She threw her head back and laughed. It wasn't pretty, it wasn't the light, feminine laughter that Kairi practiced at Princess Academy and perfected over the nine years since, but the discordant laughter of a maniac.

Her head snapped back up, her eyes fixed on Sora. "Yes it is, and no it isn't."

"What the hell does that mean, Kairi?!" Sora exclaimed, "What are you talking about?"

"It is," Kairi said, "Because Namine is what I can't be. What I won't  be. For anyone."

Sora stared. "...And...?"

Kairi smiled. "It isn't, because I wanted to take the initiative and end this joke of a relationship. Can't wait around for you to do it."

"Fine," Sora said, "You're free to do as you wish."

As Kairi walked away, Sora said, "But I'm warning you."

Kairi turned around.

"You'll regret it later! You'll see! You'll wish that you waited ten years for me to ditch your sorry ass!"

Kairi shrugged and walked away. Sure, she might regret it later, but after hearing that miniature tirade from the last person who should say anything about regret, Kairi had no qualms about it.

After all, it was far better to rule in Hell.

~End~
