A/N: ...Yes. A happy title for a none-too-happy fic. It shall be continued in another fic.
Olette sighed. Kairi was truly a mystery. She always had a smile for everyone.
It was barely a month after Sora came back, Kairi had no business in Twilight Town, yet here she came.
"Fairy tales don't exist," Kairi said, "And happy endings are a lie."
'How depressing,' Olette thought. Especially given the fact that Kairi was smiling when she said those words, even as tears threatened to fall.
"Do you really believe that?" Olette asked.
Kairi nodded. "Because happy endings aren't real. They're in fairy tales, and those are fairy tales. This is real life..."
When did Kairi become so damn cynical? Was it when Sora came back, acting like the triumphant hero? Olette listened on.
"In real life," Kairi said, "There is disappointment. Dreams are crushed. In real life...." She was still smiling, even though the tears were already falling.
Olette waited for Kairi to finish.
"In real life, it doesn't count for anything if you're a girl," Kairi said, "It doesn't count. It doesn't count for a damn thing because I don't count for a damn thing."
Olette looked at the great big Grandfather Clock on the far side of the living room, then at Kairi.
"Isn't it time for you to go?" Olette asked, "You're meeting them, right?"
Kairi stood, wiped the tears away. Smiled, as was usual. No one would know that she was hurt, or afraid, or angry.
Because Kairi had a smile for everyone, even the ones who were able to see through the armor she'd made, just to break her fragile heart.
Kairi had a smile for everyone, Olette decided. Everyone but herself.
"You make me wish I was a boy," Kairi said as she got up to leave, "Then...maybe..."
Olette smirked. She knew what Kairi was trying to say.
"Who said that you have to be a boy?"
'There,' Olette thought, 'That should stop her.'
Kairi stood a few feet from the doorway and turned around. The words just weren't coming.
And Kairi looked genuinely confused, with wide blue eyes and slightly opened mouth.
Olette smiled. 'This should be interesting,' she thought.
