Fic--"Someday" -- G
Title: Someday

Author: Rubyfruit Pixie

Fandom: Kingdom Hearts

Genre: Genfic, Character-fic

Rating: Big fat G!

Characters: Kairi, Aqua

Summary: Aqua finds Kairi in the basement of Hollow Bastion's castle, and comes to realize that the only way to ensure a better future for the little lost Darkness Container is to send her away.

Disclaimer: Disclaimers are like an endless waltz...Kingdom Hearts = Not mine. This shitty fic = Mine.
Warnings: Fail on Aqua's character. None, otherwise.

A/N: Because that Quistis/Kairi fic is not being written right now, have some Vera Important Bits of Kairi's Backstory in the Darknessverse. On that note, I need really, really good Aqua refs. I'm in a drawing mood.

The girl couldn't be any more than five or six years old, Aqua supposed. Her red hair was plastered to her head, held in place by what looked like hair gel, but smelled too much of Darkness to be anything but the contents of the Pool of Shadows, covering every part of her body in some sick parody of afterbirth. She cringed as the memories played back in her head anew. She was far older than this girl when she "volunteered", so...

"Hey, kid," she said, trying to reach out to her, "I'm not going to hurt you."

The girl looked up. "...Hi." It came out hoarsely, as if she was screaming when she went in. Aqua rolled her eyes. Obviously. Everyone screamed when they were taken down here, to the most forgotten chamber in the basements of Hollow Bastion Castle.

"You must be Kairi," Aqua said, offering her hand to the frightened girl, "Come with me."

Kairi nodded and followed the blue-haired woman out of that forgotten room.

-----------

Maybe the Cake Missions weren't so bad. Retrieve the girl and send her off in hopes of a better life, right? Aqua sighed. She hated this part of being a Chaser more the part where she had to bring death to people she barely knew.

"One day," she said, "They won't have to do this anymore, kid."

Kairi looked up with those huge blue-violet eyes and asked, "When I grow up, can I be just like you?"

"You don't want to be," Aqua answered, "You're more like me than you think."

Kairi's eyes lit up. "Oh, cool!"

This would be hard. "We're almost there," Aqua said, "Would you like me to tell you a story?"

"Yes, please!"

That was simple enough. The room where they kept the escape pods was far enough away from the basement, and there wasn't a pressing need for now. A leisurely walk through the castle couldn't do any harm. It did Aqua's conscience no good to dump Kairi onto some forgotten world and wash her hands of it as if there was nothing to it.

After all, she was in that room, too, and she had to claw her way out of the Pool on her own. It sickened her to see a child so small have to go through that.

---------

"One of these days," Aqua said, "They'll never have to use people like us for Darkness Containers."

Kairi tilted her head, and Aqua smiled. It was kind of cute. She wondered if this was what it was like to have a little sister, if only for a little while.

"Why do they do it?" Kairi asked.

"Because the world is cruel right now," Aqua explained, "It's time. Here's one!"

Kairi looked up. "Why do I have to go in there?"

"Because," Aqua said, "There's a better future out there on one of those stars that I told you about. Promise me that you won't cry?"

"I'll try," Kairi said, as the door to the tiny pod opened. "Good luck."

"Same to you, Kairi," Aqua said, "Maybe we'll meet again someday." If we both live that long. She lifted Kairi into the small vessel and rushed to the console to punch in some coordinates.

Aqua nodded. Perfect place for a new start. She hit the button to launch the pod and sighed.

Maybe this one didn't turn out so poorly, Aqua thought, as the escape pod made its way through the sky and beyond.

"Maybe, someday," Aqua said, "There'll be a better future for us all."

~End~

I wrote it in five minutes.

It's more than three hundred words.

It's amazing that I didn't fail on Aqua's character.
